Flux Projects

Flux Night 2013 Call for Proposals

Deadline for Submission: Friday, March 22, 2013

Notification: May 1, 2013

Applications accepted through CaFÉ.

Overview:

Flux Projects produces exceptional and surprising temporary public art to galvanize Atlanta’s cultural curiosity.  The highlight of our year is Flux Night, a one-night event modeled on other international celebrations such as Paris’s Nuit Blanche.  Flux Night fills the streets and empty spaces of the Castleberry Hill Arts District with visual art projects, performances, dance, music, sound and light installations, and other forms of multimedia works and public interactions.  The event will return to Castleberry on Saturday, October 5, from 7:00 p.m. until midnight.

Flux Night 2013 is being curated by Helena Reckitt.  Her theme for the evening is Free Association.  Random encounters, chance discoveries, and sensory overload are the hallmarks of Flux Night, now in its fourth year. The 2013 edition, Free Association, builds on this spirit of unexpected juxtapositions and patterns of call-and-response.  Free Association explores the ways in which images, information and identities proliferate and mutate, online and off.  It points to the strong history of digital art and collective activity within the city.  It also looks beyond the visual, to senses and experiences that catch us unaware.

Flux Night 2013 will have two categories of projects: curated projects selected directly by Reckitt and proposed projects selected from this call by a committee that will include Reckitt along with Flux Projects staff and board.

To Submit:

Submissions are being accepted through CaFÉ.  Applicants must abide by the word limits to the application questions.  Applications that do not observe these will not be reviewed for consideration.  Apply here.

CALL TO ARTISTS
Northshore Community Public Art Project, Chattanooga, TN

Issued by Public Art Chattanooga | City of Chattanooga
February 7, 2012
contact:  publicartchattanooga1@gmail.com or 423-643-6886

Public Art Chattanooga and the Northshore Community Public Art Committee is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for the commission and installation of a permanent work of public art in the Northshore community of Chattanooga, TN.  Up to five finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals for this project.  Each will be paid a $500 proposal fee.  The project budget for the selected commission is $30,000.

Eligibility:  This RFQ is open to all professional artists and artist teams over the age of 18, who currently reside in the United States.

Application Deadline:  Applications must be received by mail, hand delivery or electronically by March 2, 2012, 4:00 pm EST.  No exceptions.  Refer to page 3 for application procedures.  The Application can be found on page 5 of this document or downloaded at: http://www.publicartchattanooga.com/about/callstoartists.htm

Project Overview:

Situated just north of the Tennessee River, the Northshore has a rich history, a vibrant present, and an even brighter future.  Historical marks on the area’s timeline include threads of the Trail of Tears, a Civil War era African American encampment, and turn of the twentieth century industry and manufacturing.

Through revitalization efforts over the past twenty years, the Northshore is now one of Chattanooga’s most charming and eclectic communities bustling with activity all hours of the day and night.  The pedestrian-friendly area offers unique boutiques, independent restaurants, coffee shops, galleries, a community theatre, and various other small to mid-sized businesses.  There is also access to Coolidge Park, eco-friendly Renaissance Park, and historic bridges that connect the Northshore to downtown Chattanooga.  Distinct and diverse residential neighborhoods feed into Frazier Avenue, the artery of the community.

The sculpture site is located in a grassy lot at the corner of Frazier and Woodland Avenues, a central spot for visitors and those who live and work in the community.  The commissioned artwork should:

  • Act as a gateway piece for the community in an area that is the intersection of a number of different points.
  •  Demonstrate a call to unity for the distinct and diverse residential neighborhoods that feed into the area.
  • Speak to growth, transformation and revitalization.
  • Reflect a welcoming, open and accepting mentality.

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), in cooperation with the General Services Administration (GSA), is sponsoring a design competition for a new temporary outdoor commemorative installation in Washington, DC. The goal of the competition and resulting installation is to enhance a prominent but underutilized public space in the city’s monumental core while fostering a public dialogue regarding the nature of commemoration in the nation’s capital.

Artists and/or design professionals, working as individuals or teams, are invited to propose ideas for an innovative, temporary commemorative work that embodies the commemorative theme selected for the competition -- the founding principles and positive impact of Earth Day, the world's largest civic observance.

U.S./ Japan Creative Artists Program 2012

Guidelines and Review Criteria

The Japan U.S. Friendship Commission offers leading contemporary and traditional artists from the United States the chance to spend three months in Japan in 2013 through the U.S./Japan Creative Artists Program. Cultural understanding is at the heart of this program. Artists go as seekers, as cultural visionaries, and as living liaisons to the traditional and contemporary cultural life of Japan. They also go as connectors who share knowledge and bring back knowledge. Their interaction with the Japanese public and the outlook they bring home provide exceptional opportunities to promote cultural understanding between the United States and Japan.

Artists should have compelling reasons for wanting to work in Japan and they should do preliminary research to identify contacts there. The Commission encourages artists to consider collaboration with Japanese colleagues, as appropriate for the artistic field. Artists are free to interact with artists anywhere in the country. While many artists chose to remain in Tokyo, others have undertaken their residencies in Kyoto or other cities, and still others have worked in rural settings or have visited a number of sites relevant to their work.

Upon their arrival in Tokyo, artists will be predominantly on their own during the three-month residency period; however, International House of Japan provides in-depth orientation materials, expert advice and professional contacts, as well as some logistical support during the residency period. The Japan U.S. Friendship Commission sponsors this program with administrative assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts.
