Meet the Chastain Arts Center Staff

Karen Comer-Lowe

Karen has over 15 years of experience working within the art community. She has worked in curatorial, educational and directorial positions in institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery, the Tubman African American Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

From 1999-2003, Karen was the Gallery Supervisor and Manager of City Gallery East, a former program of the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs.  From 2003 - 2011, Karen was owner and director of Comer Art Advisory, a full service appraisal and fine arts consultant business.

Karen’s vision for Chastain is to “expand the gallery and centers visibility by enhancing  its programming; while maintaining its traditional focus.”

Lucas began working at Chastain Arts Center in October of 2005. Today, Lucas serves as the Primary Registrar, managing the creation of the class catalogues and databases, taking and reporting revenues, and maintaining registration data. As Procurement Officer he handles inventory tracking, Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Receivable, Instructor Payroll, Ledger management, and Budget creation. He attends to all installation concerns in the gallery, sets up and breaks down for classes and special events, and oversees facility maintenance concerns. As a painter, Lucas also makes himself available for critique, technical questions, or philosophical discussions about the Nature of Art and the Universe.

John started working at Chastain Arts Center in 1999 while he was in graduate school at Georgia State University.  He became the Project Coordinator for the Ceramics Department in 2001 after graduating with an MFA in Ceramics.  His duties include teaching pottery and handbuilding classes, loading, firing, and maintaining all the kilns, mixing glazes, and supporting his fellow instructors and students.

John also helps the office staff by assisting with student registration and helping with the installation of all gallery exhibitions.

Nicole Kang began as Administrative Intern on December, 2011 .  She joined the Chastain Family first as the inaugural intern of the Chastain Arts Center in spring of 2010.  A fulltime student at Oglethorpe College, she is an ambitious  art student interested in painting, curatorial work and the arts.  She assists the front office in registration, programming and educational aspects of the art exhibitions.  Nicole also maintains the e-communications,  the facebook page, and assists in managing the volunteer and internship program.
