YOUTH ART CLASSES

A materials fee is included in most pre-teen/teen class fees. Classes meet for 10 weeks, unless otherwise noted.

YOUNG at ART (Mommy and Me Class)/ Mickey McConnell                 Ages 2-4

This parent-child class explores the realms of color, texture and more while experimenting with new and innovative materials. Parents and caregivers learn what they can do to nurture creativity. Emphasis is placed on process, spatial perception and planning, and large and small motor development.

MINI DOODLERS/ Mickey McConnell                              Grades K-1

Children will create their own masterpieces using a wide range of art supplies and materials. They will develop important skills such as fine motor skills, the ability to listen and follow directions, cognitive skills, art vocabulary, and more in an environment that develops individual creativity.

PRETEEN/TEEN CLASSES

CREATIVE PORTRAITURE/Catherine Moore                                     Grades 9-11

In this class, students will use portraiture as a medium to express their creativity, identity, and self-expression. In addition to learning the basics of traditional portraiture, students will create portraits of themselves, friends, and family through inspiration from many different sources and mediums, including a “Portrait from the Past,” inspired by genealogy, a zodiac self-portrait, a mosaic portrait, and more! Students will complete the course with four or more portraits to bring home.

TIME TRAVEL THROUGH ART PORTFOLIO PREPARATION/Catherine Moore     Grades 9-12

In this class, students will learn about different artists and art movements throughout history. Students will create projects based around these artists and art movements, such as Alexander Calder’s mobiles, Georges Seurat’s pointillist paintings, M.C. Esher’s tessellations, and more! Every two weeks students will create a new project to bring home and will learn about the events in history that influenced these artists.  These projects can be used to contribute to a well-rounded portfolio for applications to summer and college programs.  In addition, students will learn about post-high school art options.

FUN WITH COMICS/Catherine Moore                              Grades 6-8

In this class, students will learn how to use sequential images (also known as comics!) to tell a story. Using their favorite comics and cartoons as examples, students will learn about plot development, delivering punch lines, sequencing pictures, and, of course, drawing imaginative characters. This class will help students with verbal and written storytelling skills as well as give them drawing practice with a variety of media. Students will finish this class with a three-page comic book, complete with cover, along with character development drawings.

PRE-TEEN POTTERY ON THE WHEEL/Nita Shrivastava                  Grades 6-8

This series of classes will explore basic wheel techniques for young students. Tuition includes one bag of clay and all firing fees.

TEEN FIGURE DRAWING/Ben Smith                  Grades 9-12

This class is for a mature artistic student with the passion to improve their craft. Teens will draw from a leotard or bathing suit model to develop skills in figure drawing. They will learn methods to enhance line quality and gain a deeper understanding of figure-environment relationships. All levels of experience are welcome. Please bring an 18"x24" rough newsprint pad, #2B pencil, Pink Pearl eraser, conte crayon, soft vine charcoal, and a kneaded eraser to the first class. A model fee of approximately $50 will be collected from each student at the first class meeting.
