Chinese painting is an active meditation, which will help you to slow down and have more focus in all areas of your life. You do not need to know how to draw! By learning strokes, techniques and patterns on an individual basis, you will acquire the tools to enable you to have a creative outlet. If you are an accomplished artist in another medium, this technique will help you become looser. A supply fee of approximately $83 will be collected from each student at the first class meeting.

Explore the excitement and challenge of painting the head and figure using the medium of your choice. Working from a live model, participants will learn specific techniques for rendering heads and figures that are solid, convincing, and alive. We will use both nude and clothed models. The course will begin with black and white studies, and color will be introduced as the quarter progresses. This course will include a combination of exercises and demonstrations. Drawing experience is a prerequisite for this intermediate level course. A model fee of approximately $60 will be collected from each student at the first class meeting.

Students will study the paintings of watercolor masters. Teacher will provide printed copies to use in class (or you can bring your own). We will discuss their style, techniques, composition, and color palettes; while painting one of their masterpieces. Teacher will demonstrate both a copy one week, then create a new painting from her sketches or photos the following class, using techniques learned from the master just studied. This class will show you how to create beautiful paintings from your favorite vacation photos. Students will create finished paintings using the water media paints of their choice (watercolor, acrylic, or gouache). Prior painting experience is beneficial. Instructor will complete class demonstrations, and students will create their own finished paintings from their own reference photographs. Returning students will build on the skills developed in previous sessions. Do not buy new supplies, we will work with what you have initially then assess if anything additional is needed.

The primary water-based paint falls into three catagories: water and ink, gouache and tempera, and acrylic. Want to get together with other artists or your friends for a regular time to paint? We offer studio space to groups of artists for a nominal rental fee. Anyone in the office will be pleased to provide you information on how to either create a group or join an existing group.
