This class will explore fabrication tools and techniques while participants make their own jewelry. We will complete as many personal pieces as we can while learning the basics of jewelry and metalsmithing. Topics will include: design/layout, cutting/sawing/piercing, soldering, bezel stone setting, and finishing. Continuing students will work on projects with instructor supervision. All tools are available in the studio but we encourage students to acquire their own basic tool kits. Come to first class with drawing notebook and mechanical pencil. Silver is available for purchase from the instructor. A materials fee of approximately $10 will be collected from each student the first class meeting.
ENAMELING/ Louella Simpson

This small, personalized class includes basic instruction in enameling. New and old techniques using watercolor, bull’s-eye glass, copper, silver, and other items to create paintings on metal and one-of-a-kind jewelry designs are explored. A materials fee of approximately $20 will be collected from each student at the first class meeting.
DISCOVERING JEWELRY AND METALS WITH DEBRA LYNN GOLD/ Debra Lynn Gold

Don’t put it off any longer – this is a “no fear” class for first time students who have always wanted to demystify the materials and methods of making metal jewelry. Absolutely no prior experience is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm. Learn the basic properties of metal and metalworking through guided exercises. We will learn forging, fabrication, soldering, piercing, inlay, roll printing, polishing, and more. Join the fun. Debra brings over 40 years of teaching experience to this course.
INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED
CONTINUING JEWELRY & METALSMITHING / Debra Lynn Gold

Continuing intermediate and advanced metals students concentrate on improving their fabrication skills, designing individual projects, and exploring contemporary issues in metals. Students must have instructor permission to take this class.
JEWELRY AND METALSMITHING EXPLORATORY / Alan Bremer

This class will explore various intermediate to advanced metals techniques with a specific focus for each quarter. Students will work on their own projects as we refine the chosen area of study. Bring a lunch and get a lot of work done. Some metalwork experience is necessary. A materials fee of approximately $10 will be collected from each student the first class meeting.
OPEN STUDIO JEWELRY

Open studio is available to current and former Chastain jewelry students who want to work independently. Students must register in advance for open studio if they wish to attend. Students will not be permitted to “drop in”.

Join us for a trunk show of handcrafted traditional and contemporary jewelry at Chastain Arts Center on Saturday, April 7, 2012, from 10 am to 5 pm.
A dozen artists will have jewelry, clocks, and small objects for sale. Come see the exciting work in silver, copper, gold, gems, glass, and enamels. All work is handmade by the artist.
A percentage of all sales goes to support the Jewelry Program which offers a wide range of beginning to advanced classes in jewelry, metalsmithing, and enameling year round.
