Students may select from either wheel or handbuilding classes for all skill levels. Chastain offers the following firing options: high fire in a gas fired reduction kiln, low fire oxidation, raku kiln and Sagger. Unique surface decorations are available including terra sigillata, underglazes, stains,
engobes, and other low fire commercial glazes.
PLEASE NOTE- All pottery and handbuilding students:
• will be issued one bag of clay the first day of class. If clay is not claimed during the current semester, it cannot be claimed
during a later semester.
• are responsible for purchasing tools for ceramics.
• only clay purchased through the center and glazes provided by the Center will be fired.
• A $15 materials fee is included in the class fee for consumable supplies provided by the Center.
Students will examine an array of wheel-thrown pottery techniques. The focus is on basic throwing skills as well as glazing, decorating, and firing.
Bring pottery tools and a towel or apron to use in class.

Open studio is for previous Chastain Arts Center students who will work independently. Registration must be approved by the Ceramics Director. Students may work when space is available and no class is meeting. Fee for open studio does NOT include any clay. Open studio ends 30 minutes prior to Center’s closing.

Handbuilt Ceramics
Teaches: Handbuilding and Wheel Throwing Classes
Handbuilding/Sculpture classes focus on the sculptural aspects of clay construction without the use of a potter’s wheel. Students will learn a
variety of techniques including coil, pinch, and slab building as well as glazing and alternative forms of surface decoration.

This class will explore beginning to intermediate handbuilding techniques. Weekly projects will be demonstrated, however, students are free to develop individual projects.

Learn about the infinite possibilities in clay. In class we will explore both functional and sculptural forms through different techniques of handbuilding. We will also examine the various options for surface texture and color. Students can either work on the suggested project or use these techniques to create their own project.

Both beginners and experienced students are welcome in this class where we will be hand building in clay. Beginners will learn the techniques and experienced students can be challenged to create larger and more difficult pieces.

These classes will address basic methods of construction for both functional and non-functional work as well as possibilities for color, texture, and imagery. Students may choose to work with suggested projects or may prefer to develop their ideas individually.

($500 for both weeks)
We will focus on thrown and altered forms using the bottle as a common denominator. Both Raku and cone 10 reduction firings will be done both weeks and slides and movies will be shown. Deer tail and bamboo brush making will also be taught. Some experience on the wheel is required. Fee includes 1 bag of clay.
