PRINTMAKING I: RELIEF/ Kathy Garrou
This class will concentrate on relief printmaking: a method that exploits the surface characteristics of any material. It is the most direct form of print making. It is not even necessary to have a press. The image can be built up using a wide variety of objects pasted onto a board in low relief, the surface of which is inked. A print is taken by placing the paper on top and either rubbing the back or by running through a press. We will explore the use of various materials, wood, linoleum and found objects; hand rubbing and press printing; multiple blocks and reduction prints. We will learn how to combine techniques to create exciting, rich prints. Beginners are welcome, as well as those with experience. Each student will receive individual attention at his or her own level. A $15 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

ENCAUSTIC WORKSHOP/ Mariana Depetris
The beeswax and Dammar resin used in encaustic techniques create transparencies and depth encouraging exploration with the concept of layering and incisions. Some of the processes will involve adding materials such as collages, handmade paper and prints. In this 2-day workshop, we will review impastos, casting objects, pouring, transferring images unto wax and dipping. Encaustic is ideal for “trapping” thin objects in layers and making polished surfaces. Materials for this class are expensive and include encaustic painting palettes, brushes, blades, boards, heat guns, thermometers, pigments and encaustic colors, beeswax, resin, inks and paper. Participants must be willing to invest time, some funds and effort for this workshop. No prior experience necessary. A $40 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.
