Summer Murals
Utilizing artists, children and the imaginations of both, the program aims to create a fanciful array of artwork to embellish neighborhoods throughout Atlanta.
The program instills a sense of involvement and community ownership in children and artists. By engaging youth in a dialogue regarding theme and design, and through hands-on experience creating a work of art, the artist fosters a sense of respect for and protection of the artwork the children create.
Throughout the summer, the excitement of developing ideas, acquiring skills and achieving success provides the momentum necessary to complete the program. Once the murals are complete they are installed at recreation centers and other municipals sites around the city.
Summer Murals has received attention from print television and radio and is the recipient of the Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies' Kaleidescope award, given to programs that have made outstanding achievements in the community arts field.
Summer Murals was introduced in 1999 and is a part of the Public Art Division's Art for City Spaces program. Summer Murals program is funded through the City's Percent-for-Art initiative.
