About the Artist
Ball-Nogues Studio is an integrated design and fabrication practice, led by Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues and operating in a territory between architecture, art and industrial design. We aim to create experimental built environments and installations that enhance public spaces through sensation, spectacle and physical engagement.
Our work is informed by the exploration of craft and essential to each project is the “design” of the production process itself. Operating as artists as well as fabricators, we devise proprietary systems of construction, create tools, develop custom software and explore new materials with the aim of expanding the potential of the physically constructed world. With a solid understanding of construction and engineering, we allow the properties, limitations, and economic scenarios associated with a project improvise a structure’s ultimate form. In this way, each piece inherently embodies a unique narrative, form and meaning.
Ball-Nogues Studio brings over 30 years of combined professional experience to our art practice. Prior to collaborating, Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues both worked for major architects and were involved in a diverse spectrum of design and fabrication projects ranging from sculptures and installations, to large public buildings and urban design. Our backgrounds enable us to successfully interface with community groups, contractors, engineers, architects, planners, city officials and public art consultants. We often consult a team of professionals, such as the international multi-disciplinary engineering firm Walter P Moore and the lighting consultants of First Circle Design. To date, we have completed 21 permanent commissions and over two-dozen temporary environments and installations.
The Studio has exhibited at major institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum; PS1; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Venice Biennale; the Hong Kong | Shenzhen Biennale; and the Beijing Biennale. We have received numerous honors including three American Institute of Architects Design Awards, United States Artists Target Fellowships and a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. In 2007, the Studio was the winner of the Museum of Modern Art PS1 Young Architects Program Competition and the work is part of the permanent collections of both MoMA and LACMA. In 2011, we were one of the Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices and in 2014 were finalists for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize in Emerging Architecture. Benjamin and Gaston have taught in the graduate architecture programs at SCI-Arc, UCLA, and USC. The Studio’s work has appeared in a variety of publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Architectural Record, Artforum, Icon, Log, Architectural Digest, Mark and Sculpture.
