A system of public art elements integrated within the intermodal zones of the new streetscape being developed for Roosevelt Road, approaching Chicago’s Museum Campus, incorporates paving, lighting, and benches that are inscribed with artifacts, places, events, actions, thought, and memories referencing nearby institutions, landscapes, and communities. About the Artist

My approach to public art+design begins with communities—to collect the underlying cultural histories, contexts and issues related to a site. In collaboration with the project team, I build upon this understanding to guide the development of the public sitework—relating its concepts, forms and content to the metaphoric potential of the site. My objective is to develop siteworks that facilitate interpretation of cultural histories, narratives and dynamics.

This process results in the development of inscribed forms, infrastructures and sustainable media that transmit community experiences, histories, or narratives, inward to and outward from the immediate community. These public siteworks—metaphoric structures enhanced with icons, symbols or inscriptions—interface with natural and built environments, integrating the languages of architecture and technology with the invisible languages and histories of urban communities.
