Curtis Ames
Artist Statement
Curtis Ames is a visual artist living and working in Atlanta. He holds a MFA in Drawing and Painting from Georgia State University, and his work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues such as Altered Aesthetics in Minneapolis, MN; New Life Shop in Berlin, Germany; AQUA Art Fair in Miami, FL; and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA. He was recently selected as a 2014/2015 MINT Leap Year Artist.
Utilizing materials and experiences sourced from the fragmentary salvage of the world around him, Curtis Ames works across sculpture, painting, and video to create scenarios evocative of indeterminacy and approximation. Through weak gestures enacted upon humble materials, Ames’ process involves minimal material manipulations or interventions, allowing a simple action to suggest a level of importance. Exploring tropes associated with themes of the impermanent, the flawed, the futile, and the incomplete, the understated artifacts of Ames’ creative practice serve as poetic referents of the inadequacies of contemporary identity and human finitude.
