Artist Statement

My artistic direction for the past several years has focused on creating art works for public spaces. For me, the attraction lies in the aesthetic challenge of responding to the project boundaries while creating art that is both conceptually and visually successful. A primary goal is to create art that can be enjoyed either day or night.

Generally, I am interested in establishing Place through creating iconic landmarks which are influenced by the community, history, and the landscape of the surround area. I use lighting to establish mood, serve as navigational markers, and present interactive element for pedestrian enjoyment. To date, I have successfully completed multiple projects which are interactive and are integrated into their environment.

Aesthetically, I am interested in both the physicality of shapes and the phenomena of light. Much of my past work has been an exploration of the relationships between steel forms, light, and landscape.

My goal is to create works that extend out—beyond their physical boundaries into the surrounding area through projected, reflected, and environmental light. I often use words, images, and maps to perforate the forms, provide context, and to serve as windows for illumination and shadow. Lighted patterns shine on and visually complete surrounding concrete and landscape features.

In the past, I have used sunlight, incandescent bulbs, fiber optics, neon, and LED light sources powered by solar arrays or common wiring. I work primarily with stainless steel because it will not corrode and requires little or no maintenance.
