Bronze and limestone
This sundial was given to Atlanta by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1983. It sits adjacent to Andrew Young Plaza. On the occasion of the dedication of the new Andrew Young Monument in Downtown Atlanta in 2008, Consul General Lutz H. Görgens, rededicated the German Sundial Sculpture in honor of German immigration to the United States. In 1983, the German Sundial was given to the City of Atlanta by the Federal Republic of Germany in celebration of centuries of German heritage in America. The festivities in 1983 included an opening concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a reception, a Gala, 16 exhibitions, 3 more concerts, several podium discussions, a film festival, an Oktoberfest, a Youth Trade Fair and a march from the German Cultural Center, Goethe, to Walton Spring Park (now Andrew Young Plaza) where the gift of the Sundial was presented to Mayor Andrew Young by German Ambassador Peter Hermes. In total, over 28,000 people participated in this week long celebration.
The bronze sundial was built in Germany by master craftsman while the limestone base was carved by local artist Charlie Mitchell. Mitchell’s work has also been featured in the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.
