Samuel Spencer Monument
Daniel Chester French
1910
Bronze and Knoxville marble
This historic bronze memorial sculpture is dedicated to Samuel Spencer, founder of Southern Railway, now known as Norfolk Southern. It is considered to be the prototype for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Initially commissioned in 1909 by 30,000 Southern railway employees, the sculpture has moved through several locations in Atlanta and in 2009, it came to its current location to the Norfolk Southern Headquarters.
The statue was designed by Daniel Chester French, a prominent American sculptor in the first half of the twentieth century. He was the sculptor behind the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial and worked with the same materials studio of marble carvers, the Piccirilli Brothers.
