Special Presentation: Baba Ali Abdullah and The History of Black Vernacular Dance

On August 18th choreographer and dance historian Baba Ali Abdullah will give a special presentation on the history of black men in vernacular dance in the Watershed Auditorium at the 72 Marietta Street building (the site location of Gallery 72). Abdullah will trace the history of black men dancing from Africa to now, from traditional folk, to modern hip-hop dance, and more. The presentation will weave Abdullah’s personal history of migration from Charleston to Harlem, and his experiences performing with the Senegalese National Ballet, and his participation in the continued growth of African dance traditions in the America’s.
